$46.5 million to improve household food security through increased agricultural productivity, household incomes, and awareness about health and nutrition – specifically focused in the Mid-Western and Far-Western development regions.

GAFSP funding for Nepal aims to improve food security in the poorest and most food insecure regions across three key aspects of food security – availability, access, and utilization. The project will directly benefit approximately 150,000 small and marginal farmers, 50,000 young mothers, children and adolescent girls, and 25,000 agricultural wage workers.

Agricultural Productivity:

GAFSP funding will support increased small infrastructure support, access to locally appropriate technologies, and control of diseases and pests. It will also support government efforts to identify new and improved technologies – crop varieties, livestock breeds, seeds/saplings, and management practices.

Household Incomes:

By increasing productivity, GAFSP funding will contribute to increases in food availability and household incomes. Additionally, the program will focus on changing the behaviors that drain family finances and place households on a reduced income trajectory, such as consumption of seed stock and sale of productive assets.

Awareness About Health and Nutrition:

GAFSP funding will support sub-projects designed to provide dietary support, increase supply of nutritious foods, and promote appropriate nutrition, health, and hygiene behaviors through community based programs. These programs will target pregnant and breast feeding women, children under two years old, and adolescent girls. Educational activities will cover the source and value of nutritious food, proper utilization of available foods, the importance of sanitation, and the value of appropriate feeding practices for young children, including breast feeding infants.

The Mid-Western and Far-Western regions are the two regions where poverty and malnutrition are the highest in the country. The Nepal Living Standard Survey (NLSS III, 2010) showed that 37% of the people in the rural hills of these regions fall below the poverty line, compared to the national average of 25.16%. The proportion of underweight children under the age of 5 years in the Mid-Western region the highest in the country (more than 10%). The project has been designed to enhance food security and nutrition in food insecure communities in these two regions.
