$30 million for the Strategic Support for Food Security Project (SSFSNP) to raise agricultural productivity, link farmers to markets and develop institutional capacity to provide farmer families with food and nutrition security.
GAFSP funding will enable the scaling-up of interventions with demonstrated success. Project interventions will be implemented based on a peer-learning and knowledge sharing approach.
Raising agricultural productivity
The project will focus on raising agricultural productivity through micro irrigation schemes. The project will also support climate smart sustainable upland farming using conservation farming techniques; agroforestry and nutrition supportive agricultural interventions for smallholder farmers such as the creation of fish ponds and home gardens.
Linking Farmers to Markets
The project will assist in organizing farmer based organizations such as associations, cooperatives, or Community-Based Enterprises (CBEs) so that they can transition into processing, storage and other practices that would add value to their outputs. The organizations will provide training to farmers in management, technical and marketing skills.
Technical Assistance, Institution Building and Capacity Development
The project will help to build the capacity of provincial and district staff to transition from technical trainers to facilitators of farmer groups. The project will also aim to build the capacity of villagers to enable them to fully participate in the development of their communities.
The GAFSP Private Sector Window is also funding Acldea MFI to promote access to finance for agricultural enterprises and SMEs in Lao PDR.
