GAFSP financing will create surface water harnessing facilities, structures, and irrigation works as well as implementing counter erosion measures in watersheds upstream of the structures. GAFSP activities support construction and rehabilitation of water-spreading bunds, mini dams, and irrigation areas which will help to increase the arable land area by more than 17,000 hectares. This is being complemented by the construction of community wells, rural roads, storage infrastructure and measures for improving land-tenure security on the project sites, and thereby is expected to improve the living standards of more than 200,000 people.
This interactive map of Niger highlights the project areas of the Water Mobilization for Improving Food Security in the Regions of Maradi, Tahoua and Zinder (PMERSA-MTZ) project funded by GAFSP. The map overlays sub-national poverty data, rural development data, demographic indicators and project infomration.

The three regions selected have particularly higher rates of malnutrition, poverty and food insecurity in the country, among other reasons, due to a lack in availability and access to adequate water resource.
