Results

Most GAFSP projects are either in preparation or the beginning stages of implementation. As of May 31, 2012 US$ 26.4 million dollars has been disbursed to  Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Togo, with the first disbursement in September 2011.  These countries, which were allocated funds during the first round of grants in June 2010, are already showing early results. GAFSP has identified expected results based on the 10 projects that have established baseline values and results targets.  The numbers below will be updated regularly.

Project results on the ground as of May 31, 2012

 

Bangladesh Integrated Agricultural Productivity Project (IAPP)

  • 375 new Livelihood Field Schools were created, 758 Rabi season demonstrations were conducted, and 750 Kharif demonstrations were held to introduce farmers to new production technologies

  • Training courses on M&E, project management, project management, Ruralinvest, Costab, and good agricultural governance, have been prepared and are being delivered to government staff during the second half of 2012
  • Maps of farmer organizations were created, with support from local CSOs, in order to identify the farmers' capacity building requirements

 

Rwanda Land Husbandry, Water Harvesting and Hillside Irrigation Project (LWH)

  • 6,750 farmers and their families are benefitting from project activities
  • 66% of farmers in the project area have adopted improved practices (baseline: 25% of female farmers and 30% of male fa mers)
  • Net sales from agricultural activities on targeted, non-irrigated hillsides have almost doubled to US$ 1,925 per hectare (baseline: US$ 1,000/ha)
  • 40% of land in the project area has been protected against soil erosion, which protects the environment and farmers' livelihoods (baseline: 15%)

Sierra Leone: Smallholder Commercialisation Programme (SCP)

  • The preparation for delivering improved extension services to farmers through 360 Farmer Field Schools (FFSs) has been completed; 180 FFS demo sites are operational during this 2012 agricultural season
  • Rehabilitation for irrigation has begun on 500 ha of inland valleys swamps to increase national rice production in five districts
  • Six Financial Services Associations were established, staffed, and equipped with cash safes, motor cycles, and stationery in the four Northern Districts (Kambia-1, Tonkolili-3, Bombali -1 and Port Loko-1)

 

Togo -Agriculture Sector Support Project (PASA) and Project to Support Agricultural Development (PADAT)

PASA:

  • 420 client days of training on results based monitoring and evaluation and financial management were provided to staff of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries

PADAT:

  • 18,028 poor farmers (and their families) have been identified to receive seeds, fertilizers through quick-start operations under the leadership of CSOs. The seeds have already been  secured with Centrale d'Achat et de Gestion des Intrants Agricoles (CAGIA) for distribution to the beneficiaries in all five regions during seeding season:

  • Harvesting and processing equipment delivered to 350 farmer groups
  • Approximately 50% of the intended construction and rehabilitation of shelter space for processing equipment and for post-harvest storage has been completed
  • 200 FFSs initiated, with farmers in the project carrying out group-based experimental learning activities to better understand integrated pest management techniques
  • 1,000 ha have adopted natural resources conservation techniques such as, simple soil and water conservation techniques
  • New lowland rice varieties are being cultivated on 750 ha
  • 250 km of rural road rehabilitated for improved access to markets
