Agricultural production and productivity
The project focuses on irrigation development, crop diversification, farmer training on crop management including conservation farming and rotations, and livestock development by improving livestock production and productivity through use of good animal husbandry practices and improved dairy animal breeds.
Value chain development and market linkages
The project installs processing plants for industrial milling and crop processing facilities as well as strengthens the capacity of agro-dealers to fill the gap between small scale farmers and the main input supply firms. It also provides support for new agro-centers to be “one-stop shops” for agricultural inputs, have warehouse facilities for produce storage, and establish linkages between raw material and service needs of industrial processors and smallholder producers. The project also improves road networks to enhance agro-business activities and address the communities’ access to social services.
The project focuses on capacity building of local communities with deliberate targeting of female headed households on various technologies used in different types of food processing and preservation. GAFSP aims to address institutional and capacity constraints by focusing on building capacity of existing staff in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and other related ministries. The project also establishes a monitoring and evaluation system to track project implementation using results-based logical framework indicators and targets.
